TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona's women's golf team combined a bit of age and experience with youth to post its best team single-round score of the spring season Friday in round one of the PING/ASU Invitational. The Wildcats shot 6-over-par 294 to land in fourth place with 36 holes remaining in the three-day tournament.

Powered by strong performances from a pair of freshmen and one senior, the Wildcats posted their best 18-hole score since Nov. 3 when they shot 293 in the final round of the Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational.

Senior Anne Lee posted a 1-under-par 71 Friday, marking the third time in her career that she has shot below par. Lee is in fifth place. Freshman Cassandra Kirkland continued her emergence as one of the Wildcats' most consistent performers, shooting even-par 72 to earn a share of 10th place. Classmate Erica Blasberg, the nation's top-rated individual, notched a 1-over-par 73 and is tied for 15th place with 12 other golfers.

UCLA, on the strength of Charlotte Mayorkas' 66, holds the first-round lead as the Bruins shot 6-under-par 282. Mayorkas leads the field individually. Texas placed all five of its golfers in the top-15 and is in second place at 285 (-3). California stands third at even-par 288.

"Even though we're 12 shots behind UCLA, I feel good about the team's performance today," head coach Greg Allen said. "I told the team to not look at the scoreboard and only worry about our own performances and we'll make a move. Hopefully, we can cut out some of the silly mistakes that cost us a few shots today."

Senior Laura Myerscough turned in Arizona's final counting score as she carded a 6-over-par 78. Sophomore Miriam Kraschinski completed the Arizona lineup and shot 10-over-par 82. Myerscough and Kraschinski are tied for 64th and 83rd places, respectively. Competing as individuals, sophomore Mar Garcia (76, +4) and freshman Whitney Welch (83, +11) are in 42nd and 85th places, respectively.

The tournament continues Saturday at the Karsten Golf Course on the campus of Arizona State University. The Wildcats begin play at 8:40 a.m. from the No. 1 tee.
