KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa.?-Arizona junior cornerback Antoine Cason is among 60 players named to the watch list for the 2006 Chuck Bednarik Award for the nation’s Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year.

Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski announced the list for that honor as well as the for the 70th Maxwell Award for the Collegiate Player of the Year. The Bednarik Award will be given for the 12th season in 2006.

The candidates for the Bednarik Award were selected by the Maxwell Football Club Advisory Committee. Additions and subtractions to the lists, based on player performance, will be made through out the 2006 football season.

Players selected to these initial watch lists have distinguished themselves as All-Conference or All-American selections from their respective universities in past years. Underclassmen are selected based on recommendations from the Maxwell Football Club Advisory Committee.

Twelve semi-finalists for each award will be announced in October 2005 and the field will be trimmed to three finalists in November 2005. The winners of the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show that will be broadcast on ESPN in December 2006

Cason has been one of the Wildcats’ key defensive players since he stepped on the field as a true freshman in 2004, earning Freshman All-America honors from The Sporting News. He has played every defensive snap in his first two seasons, along with teammate and fellow corner Wilrey Fontenot, and leads active Arizona players with seven career interceptions. He was a second-team All-Pac-10 selection in 2005.

He, junior Fontenot and senior safety Michael Johnson are expected to anchor the secondary, one of Arizona's top units this season. The every-snap aspect of Cason's reputation has clearly been supported by his play in his first two seasons.

The award is named for former University of Pennsylvania great Chuck Bednarik, who later played both ways for the Philadelphia Eagles for 14 years. He was noted as an "iron man" type of player. He is a member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. Linebacker Paul Posluszny of Penn State won the honor in 2005.
