TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The No. 62 University of Arizona men’s tennis team (5-8) fell to No. 8 UCLA (10-3) 7-0 to end the Wildcats winning streak of four consecutive home matches. The match was much more competitive than the 7-0 score may indicate. “You can tell by the match scores that the no one got killed, every set was decided by one break of serve or a tiebreaker,” said Arizona assistant coach Tom Lloyd. “In the end, things just didn’t go our way.”

In doubles, representing UCLA at the No. 1 position was the undefeated duo of Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel. The No. 7 team in the nation took down Arizona’s Claudio Christen and Ravid Hezi 8-5. The other two Wildcat tandems suffered similar fates as UCLA headed into singles play with a one-point advantage.

Kohlloeffel, No. 4 in the nation, defeated Christen at the No. 1 spot while No. 48 Haythem Abid beat Arizona freshman Ravid Hezi at No. 2. Both matches were 6-4, 6-4. Alcala and Jason Labrosse only lost their serves one time each, but both ended up dropping their matches to No. 47 Chris Surapol and Philipp Gruendler, respectively. At No. 5, sophomore Peter Zimmer was engaged in a three-set match for the fifth time in his last seven outings. This one ended in favor of the opposition, as UCLA’s Michael Look came away with the win 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. Arizona freshman Alex Labrosse also went three sets before losing to sophomore Michael Drean.

UCLA is historically known for touting one of the nation’s strongest and consistent collegiate tennis programs. Their lineup currently features more players ranked within the top 50 than any other team in the pac-10. Tomorrow, the Wildcats take on the No. 4 USC Trojans (11-0). The match begins at 1 p.m. at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Complex. USC defeated UCLA 6-1 on March 9.
