Arizona Head Coach Sean Miller
"This was a very tough game, very frustrating to officiate, frustrating to coach, frustrating for the fans to be a part of. I give a lot of credit to our guys, we were up by only seven at half, and then came out and extended the lead. We were a lot more consistent in the second half, which you can tell from the lopsided final score."
"I liked that we left our bad six or eight minutes behind, our bench did a very good job against a team that shrinks the clock on purpose, and they consistently press. We won by a lot, but this is a type of game where it feels like we only won by six. They have a very unique style, and we're going to go up against a lot of different styles this season. This is one that we're definitely going to learn from."
"They kept switching up their defense. They would go from zone to man-to-man to press and drop to press and trap. In the first half, our nine turnovers hurt us, because they were from a lot of individual players trying to force individual plays, which looks bad against such a quick team. We were scrambling. In the second half we moved the ball well, shared a lot better, and ended up taking a lot better shots. We only had three turnovers in the second half. We shot 51 percent for the game, and that was helped by shooting 58 percent in the second half. Our performance after halftime definitely showed improvement."
"Jamelle Horne did a good job tonight. He's learning to worry less about the shot and is definitely one of our best defensive players. He is a great shooter, but he is starting to figure out that he doesn't have to make threes to be good."
"Jesse Perry came off the bench and played fifteen minutes and had six rebounds. He played a lot in that four to six minute stretch that really broke the game open for us, mostly with his effort. We also played Jordin Mayes for 18 minutes tonight, which is a high for him. It was easy to see that at the end of the game he got pretty winded on defense. That's normal for a freshman."
"Our stats coming off the bench were good, especially in the second half. Our competition is going to increase going into this weekend. Santa Clara is a very good team, and Kansas speaks for itself. We're not going to change how we do things. Our game plan is just a work in progress. We're still identifying our roles and subbing patterns. We're going to work on smoothing that out. When you play ten guys, there are going to be a lot of combinations checking into the game. We've been together since mid-October, so it hasn't been a very long time. We are a hard working team, and we're looking forward to the challenge ahead of us. Both games are going to be meaningful. It's going to be interesting to see how we play our defense on the road."
Arizona Player Quotes
On the win:
"I think we were kind of slow coming out. The other team came out and slowed the game down. We are a running team and they got us out of the comfort zone but in the second half we just came out and turned it around."
On heading to Las Vegas:
"I think the trip will help us out a lot. We are going for the win. I think both teams, Santa Clara and Kansas are very good teams every year and we are trying to get win one and win two and I think Santa Clara will prepare us for Kansas."
On his 13 points:
"I wouldn't say it was my best game defensively or offensively. It felt like we only won by 10 but it was by thirty some."
On words of wisdom for the younger players:
"There's no pressure even though the competition has been raised, just keep doing what we are doing and the games will get more interesting. I'm just out there playing crashing the boards every game."
"I think at the beginning of the season we are all trying to get our comfort level up from behind the line. We're not shooting too well right now. We shoot well in practice though, so coach doesn't mind us taking those shots in the game."
On a 4-0 start:
"All the teams we have played are going to win a lot of games this season. They aren't bad teams, but it's nice to get four wins and head up to Vegas."
On the game:
"It was a hard turnaround but coach is telling us it's just like Pac-10 play. I think we were up by seven at half and coach put emphasis on getting stops defensively, because if we don't get stops we can't push it."
