TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona Wildcat men’s golf will wrap up its 2010 fall slate as it takes on the field at the Gifford Collegiate Championship, held in San Martin, Calif., Nov. 8-10.

Arizona will look to close out the fall strong after a disappointing first three tournaments. However, fall performances are not always indicative of spring success. Statistically speaking, Arizona has gotten off to slow starts in each of the past three seasons. The team’s fall stroke average from last year was 25 strokes higher than its spring numbers. The Wildcats also had a higher fall stroke average during the 2008-09, 2007-08 and 2006-07 seasons. Arizona averaged a ninth place finish in five fall events last year, compared to an average finish of just over sixth place during the spring portion of the schedule (nine events). Through three events this season, the Cats are averaging just better than a tenth place finish.

The tournament format will test Arizona’s depth; the event strays from the standard play-five, count-four format to the play-six, count-five, the first such tournament UA has competed in this season. The Wildcat’s lineup will be: Tarquin MacManus, Jonathan Khan, Erik Oja, Tye Beall, Philip Bagdade and John Kostis. Beall, a freshman out of El Paso, Texas, will be making his Wildcat debut in the tournament. This will be the first tournament of the season for Kostis, a senior who has been battling injury.

The field consists of: host UCLA, Arizona, Augusta State, Lamar, Long Beach State, Northwestern, Oregon, Oklahoma, San Diego, Stanford, USC and Washington. Augusta State is the defending NCAA Champion.

Last year’s event was won in record fashion by Stanford; its score was the lowest since the tournament adopted the play-six, count-five format. Arizona finished ninth while both Khan and MacManus recorded top-20 finishes; Khan’s seventh place finish led the way.

The Gifford Collegiate is contested at the CordeValle Resort in San Martin, Calif., a par-72, 7,169 yard course. Live results will be available at golfstat.com. For complete results from the Gifford Collegiate and continued coverage of Arizona Wildcat men’s golf, visit ArizonaWildcats.com.
