Wildcats beat Highlanders in five sets
In the team’s first five-set match of the season, the Arizona volleyball squad (9-1) prevailed 3-2 over the University of California Riverside Friday on the campus of Loyola Marymount.
The Wildcats jumped on the Highlanders with wins in the first two sets 25-18 and 25-21, but UCR come right back and tied up with match with a 19-25 third and 22-25 fourth before Arizona won the match 15-10 in five.
“Although I’m not happy with how we played, I think it was good to have to fight through that and play well enough to get the win,” head coach Dave Rubio said. “We’ll face those situations later in the season and it was good we were able to pull this one out.”
For the third time this season, sophomore outside hitter Whitney Dosty led the team in kills, recording 16 and classmate Tiffany Owens was right behind her with 14. Dosty’s 16 kills was a team-high for the season, as was her 41 attempts.
As a team, Arizona struggled with 25 attack errors and nine service errors, which tied a season-high.
“We’re not playing real clean right now and if we don’t take care of the ball better it will come back to hurt us,” said Rubio.
Senior Brittany Leonard played her most significant time so far in 2008 and recorded a team-high 18 digs and sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Snow added six blocks. Combined, the Wildcats recorded 13.5 blocks, a season-high as well.
Arizona plays one more match tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. against host Loyola Marymount before coming back home to open conference play next weekend.
“The hope is we play a cleaner match (against LMU) and if we do that I like our chances,” Rubio said.
