TUCSON, Ariz.- Sophomore pitcher Chris Goodman has been named to the 2002 Men's Division Verizon Academic All-District VIII Baseball Team as selected by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America. The sophomore right-hander, who is majoring in business, has a perfect 4.0 grade point average in his two years at Arizona.
Goodman, along with 10 other student-athletes, will represent the district - which is comprised of schools from Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia - later this season on the Verizon Academic All-America ballot.
A native of nearby Benson, Ariz., Goodman joins Kenny Corley and Jason Hendricks as one of just three players to be named to the academic honor since 1996. Corley was recognized for his academic prowess three times (1996-98) and Hendricks once (1998). To be eligible for consideration a student-athlete must carry a 3.2 GPA or higher, must be in at least his second year of participation at the school and must be an important contributor to the team.
Goodman has been one of the top relievers out of the Wildcat bullpen this season, posting a 3-2 record and 4.93 ERA in 45.2 innings pitched. He has struck out 26 hitters in 17 appearances this year.
