TUCSON, Ariz.--Jennie Finch's sixth-inning single gave Arizona its eighth run for a mercy-rule victory over the Oregon Ducks, 8-0, Saturday night at Hillenbrand Stadium. The top-ranked Wildcats built a big early lead and stayed pat until the next-to-last frame.
UA ace Finch scattered six hits and struck out eight to boost her record to 23-0. She faced a jam when Oregon loaded the bases in the sixth with a hit by Alyssa Laux, a walk by Missy Coe and a single by Triawna Custer, but struck out Janell Bergstrom for the final out.
The win was Arizona's 40th consecutive home-field victory dating to last season. Andrea Vidlund took the loss and dropped to 9-8.
Leneah Manuma led off the Cats' sixth with a single, and pinch-runner Lisha Ribellia advanced to second on a wild pitch. Finch knocked a hit up the middle for the eight-run rule.
UA took a quick 3-0 lead in the first. Infield singles by Lauren Bauer and Nicole Giordano plus a walk to Toni Mascarenas loaded the bases, and Leneah Manuma drew another walk off OU pitcher Andrea Vidlund to drive in the first run. Vidlund turned Jennie Finch's grounder into a 1-2-3 double play but Lindsey Collins doubled in Mascarenas and Manuma.
The Wildcats sent 10 batters to the plate in the second and scored four more runs to make it 7-0. Consecutive one-out singles by Kim Balkan, Bauer and Giordano loaded the bases and Mascarenas drove in two with a single to left. Manuma dropped in a single to re-load the bases and reliever Lisa Wangler walked Finch to force in another run. Collins followed with an RBI single.
Arizona (50-4) won 50 games in a season for the 11th time in school history, all under coach Mike Candrea, and improved its league-leading mark to 12-2 in Pac-10 play. The Ducks fell to 25-31 and 1-12. The two teams complete their series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
