Senior Women's Tennis Player Natasha Marks -
Hey Wildcat Fans!
Last weekend was very important for us as we played two Pac-12 teams and wanted to redeem ourselves from the loss at Washington State in Pullman. So far this season, we are undefeated at home and want to keep it that way as we go into conference matches.
Our first match was on Friday against the Washington Huskies, who have always been a tough team and since I have been here. We had never beaten them and it was time for revenge this year.
We were also back to full strength as Kim “Wildcat” Stubbe had suffered an ankle injury (practicing with me) before spring break and had been out ever since.
Doubles started according to plan and we won on all three courts, which put us in a great position going forward into singles. After a 10 min break and team talk we walked back on court for singles.
Singles was tight from positions one through six, but early wins from myself and Sarah kept us ahead and we had to go and support our teammates like crazy! It was scorching hot and after three hours of singles play, we had two matches left on court…sophomores Lacey and Kim.
This was Kim’s first match in two weeks and the most tennis she had played since her ankle injury. She struggled in the heat as she CRAMPED, which brought back memories of her full body cramp at Vanderbilt.
She came from a set down and battled away in a tiebreaker. At the same, time Lacey was playing a great match against the No. 11-ranked girl in the nation and was winning. It was tense and Kim was cramping on court three, trying to stay alive and the rest of us were cheering Lacey on to win so we would win the match. Washington saved five match points, but Lacey came through on the sixth for the best win of her career and clinched the match for us!!!
The final result was Arizona 4, Washington 3.
The next day we played Oregon at an earlier start time of 12:30 and it was another hot day. In the past, Oregon has been a tricky team, but one in recent years we had won, so we were looking forward to trying to get another win on the board. Oregon always shows a lot of fight so we were ready to go.
The match started of in the same fashion, with Arizona taking all three of the doubles matches and the doubles point.
Singles got ahead as all three seniors posted singles wins. Senior Debora Castany finished first with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Sarah and I followed shortly after.
Looking down the courts, we were winning on every court and soon it came down to court one again where Lacey was in a battle with senior Julia Metzger. It was a really close match, but unfortunately Mighty Mouse lost 7-6, 6-4.
We won the match 6-1 and the weekend competition was over with two wins over Pac-12 schools. We kept our record of being undefeated at home and now we looked forward to travelling to Stanford and Cal on Thursday.
Thanks for everyone’s support last weekend. We had a great crowd! And a big thank you to the red/grey people (as Kim calls you), you are an inspiration. I look forward to the U of A banquet where we can all dress up.
Bear down and GO CATTTSSS!
