TUCSON - The No. 31-ranked Arizona Wildcat women's tennis team defeated the No. 62 UC-Irvine Anteaters on Wednesday at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

"We're happy to come away with this win," said head coach Vicky Maes. "We knew UCI was a good team and that we had to play focused all the way through. We decided to switch up our doubles teams a little since we've been flat in the last few matches. It helped but we still have work in that area."

In doubles action, the Cats (15-3, 2-0 Pac-10) won two of three matches to collect the doubles point and take the early lead. On court one, senior Jane Huh and junior Sarah Landsman teamed up to battle Becka Kwan and Hannah Holladay. The UA team was edged 8-6 in the Cats' only doubles loss of the day. Natasha Marks and Lacey Smyth teamed up on court two. The duo beat the Anteater team of Courtney Byron and Kristina Smith, 8-3. On court three, Kim Stubbe and Susan Mc Rann defeated Hayley Young and Miranda Young, clinching the doubles point for the Cats.

In singles play, Arizona won four of six matches, earning the program's 15th victory. Landsman took on Byron on court one. They Syosset, N.Y. native was edged 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. On court two, Marks beat Kwan, 7-5, 6-1. The win improves Marks' dual match record to 12-4 this season. Smyth battled Smith on court three. The freshman from Oceanside, Calif. defeated Smith, 6-4, 6-4.

Freshman Kim Stubbe played Franziska Goettsching on court four. The Mol, Belgium native earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory. The Anteaters earned their second, and final, point of the day on court five, where Mc Rann battled Brooke Schweyer. The freshman from Dublin, Ireland was edged 6-3, 6-2. On court six, Huh played Holladay. The senior from Los Angeles, Calif. defeated Holladay, 1-6, 7-6, 10-8.

"In singles play, we didn't play great but we battled, and that's something that's been key on this team," Maes said. "Now we can concentrate on our upcoming match with Washington and hopefully come away with a win there."

The Cats improve to 15-3 overall while the Anteaters fall to 7-8 overall.

The Wildcats play next in Seattle, Wash. as they take on the Washington Huskies. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m. on Sunday, March 27.
