The Arizona women's volleyball team opened the 2008 season with a 3-0 win over Weber State to kick off the Wildcat Classic at McKale Center Friday.
The Wildcats battled through the first game winning 26-24 and cruised in the match's final two sets 25-13, 25-19.
"I think we did a nice job out of system and I felt like we were pretty organized," head coach Dave Rubio said.
Arizona was led offensively by sophomore outside hitter Tiffany Owens, who finished the match with 11 kills and a .214 hitting percentage. She was 11-of-28 with five errors. Owens also added 12 digs, to finish second on the team in that category behind junior Alanna Resch, who had 13.
Four Wildcats made their debuts for the squad. Freshman Courtney Karst led all new comers with six kills and added one solo block and three assisted blocks in three games. Freshmen Amy Webster and Dana Hutchinson along with redshirt freshman Kaylen Bannister all saw time in their first collegiate contest.
Making her return, after missing all of last season with a knee injury, sophomore outside hitter Whitney Dosty finished with nine kills and a .034 hitting percentage. The Tucson-product went 9-for-29 with eight attack errors.
"It's nice to be back, but I think we just got a little eager at some points," Dosty said about the errors. "Overall we came out with the W."
As a team, the Wildcats had 20 hitting errors, nine service errors and two block errors.
"I don't think we played very efficient," said Rubio. "But, I'm pleased with winning."
