STARKVILLE, Miss. ?- The No. 15-ranked Mississippi State baseball team (11-0) scored two runs off of Arizona closer Mark Melancon in the eighth inning to complete a three-game series sweep of the Wildcats (10-8) with a 5-4 victory at Dudy Noble Field on Sunday.

Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the eighth, the Bulldogs opened the frame with back-to-back singles by Joseph Hunter and Mitch Moreland, and loaded the bases on a walk to Andy Rice.

Freshman first baseman Brad Glenn misplayed a grounder by pinch hitter Brian LaNifa in the next at-bat, allowing Hunter to tie the game at 4-4, and a passed ball off the glove of catcher Konrad Schmidt two hitters later allowed the go-ahead run to score.

MSU closer Brett Cleveland retired the Arizona side in order in the top of the ninth to preserve the win for reliever Aaron Weatherford (1-0). Melancon, who gave up his first earned run out of the bullpen this season, was charged with his second loss after giving up the two runs in the eighth.

The Wildcats had jumped out to a 4-1 lead with a pair of runs in the second and two in the third, but MSU pulled within one when Jeff Butts hit a two-run triple off Melancon after the Bulldogs had posted back-to-back two out singles off of starter Brad Mills in the sixth.

UA’s Glenn hit a two-run homer for Arizona in the third inning.

The series sweep was the first suffered by the Wildcats since April 23-25, 2004 at Washington. Arizona will host No. 8 Cal State Fullerton for three games next weekend in Tucson.
