TUSCON, Ariz.??C Arizona womenˇ?s soccer lost a heartbreaker to No. 2 Santa Clara, 1-0, in double-overtime, Sunday afternoon at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium.

The Cats and Broncos played a scoreless 10 minute overtime period.? Less than two minutes into the second overtime the Broncoˇ?s ended the game on a goal by Brittany Klein.? The goal came off a free kick following an Arizona foul, Klein was assisted by Lexi Orand and Tina Estrada.

?

ˇ?You are never going to keep a good team scoreless for 102 minutes,ˇ± Tobias said.? ˇ?It would have been another good win, had we got it, over a top-five team before the start of conference.?? Now we have to just rest and recover and get ready for next weeks games.ˇ±

The win improves the No. 2 Broncos to 6-0-1, while dropping the Wildcats to 4-4-0.

Nine minutes into the game the Wildcats had a scoring opportunity when sophomore forward Jacqueline Broussard received a pass from classmate Jasmine Namdar, but Broncoˇ?s goalkeeper Meagan McCray made a diving save.

ˇ?Jacky had a great opportunity to score, nine minutes into the game, but their goalkeeper made a great save,ˇ± head coach Dan Tobias said.? ˇ?Elite programs like Santa Clara, who are national championship caliber teams every year, usually have an outstanding goalkeeper.ˇ±

Arizona had other opportunities to score, but could not put the ball in the net.??At the 58 minute mark the Wildcats had two shots on goal by Samantha Tiampo and Jasmin Day, Tiampoˇ?s shot was saved and Dayˇ?s shot missed high and to the right.

ˇ?Itˇ?s a shame we didnˇ?t get a goal,ˇ± said Tobias.? ˇ?I thought we did enough to get the win.ˇ±

In the closing seconds of regulation Arizona had a chance to get the win, but time wasnˇ?t on their side.? Laura Huylebroeck put what would have been the game winner in the net seconds after the sound of the final horn.

Up Next:?On Friday, Sept. 28, Arizona hosts the Creighton Blue Jays at 7 p.m.??On Sunday, Sept. 30, the Cats play host to the San Diego State Aztecs at 1 p.m.? Both games are part of the Four Points by Sheraton Tucson University Plaza Wildcats Classic.
