GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The No. 29-ranked sophomore Maja Mlakar won her match in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships Monday, May 19. Also competing for Arizona was No. 45 sophomore Dianne Hollands who fell to No. 37 Sarah Witten of Kentucky.
Mlakar, a sophomore from Maribor, Slovenia, defeated No. 26 Nataly Cahana of Old Dominion in three sets. Cahana came out quickly, winning the first set, 1-6. Mlakar then battled back, earning the victory by winning the last two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Hollands won her first set, 6-3, but could not hold on, falling 4-6, 7-6 (0), to Witten in the next two sets.
The win raises Mlakar's overall season record to 27-15, while the loss ends Hollands season with a record of 28-16.
Mlakar will compete Tuesday, May 20, in Gainesville, Fla., in the second round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships.
