The Cats shot a 298 (+10) and sit only seven strokes behind tournament leading UCLA who shot a 291 (+3). The USC Trojans carded a 292 (+4), one off the tournament leading Bruins.
Individually for the Cats, freshman Lauren Espinosa shot a 70 (-2) and is in a three-way tie for second place, only one stroke off the leader, University of Washington’s Paige Mackenzie 69 (-3). Fellow classmate Amanda Wilson and teammate Cassandra Kirkland each shot 75 (+3). The Wildcat duo currently sits in a tie for 22nd place.
“Lauren came out and really played well for us,” head coach Greg Allen said. “She started to get into a grove and birdied her final hole.”

“It was great to see Lorena speak and a great opportunity for some of our young girls to meet her.” Allen said. “Hopefully we will get to spend a little more time with her before we leave, and if we’re lucky some of her good karma will rub off on us.”

“There have been a few times this season in which we have struggled early in the first round and in turn essentially taken ourselves out of contention very early.” Allen said. “As of now we are right in the middle of the pack, but trail the leader by only seven strokes. I am very confident heading into the second round and feel that we have put ourselves in a good position to climb up the leader board.”
The Wildcats women’s golf team will tee of for the second round tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. CT.
