Cats Finish Sixth in John A. Burns Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona men’s golf team carded a third round 286 (-2) to finish sixth in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate. With three golfers in the top five, UNLV took home the team title.

 

Arizona, who entered the day in fifth place in the event, finished sixth despite a 77 (+5) and a 79 (+7) by its top two golfers, Tarquin MacManus and Rich Saferian, respectively. Both scores are season lows for the two. MacManus’ 77 came in the final round, dropping him to T43. The junior started the day tied for 16th, looking for his third consecutive top-10 finish in the event.

 

UNLV and Texas A&M finished the third round tied at 28 under. UNLV then won the playoff on the first hole. At the conclusion of day two, there was a very tight race at the top of the leader board, with California holding a two stroke lead. In the third round, UNLV and Texas A&M separated themselves from the field, beating the third place teams by 12 strokes. Cal, the leader after rounds one and two, fell into a tie for third with BYU. The two were 16 under. New Mexico finished fifth at 853 (-11).

 

Texas A&M’s Andrea Pavan carded the lowest round of the day, a 65 (-7), to claim the individual medal. At 12 under, Pavan won by two strokes. Derek Evans of UNLV finished second at 10 under. At 207 (-9), Brett Kanda of UNLV and Robbie Fillmore of BYU tied for third. Kevin Penner of UNLV finished fifth.

 

Philip Bagdade collected his first top-20 finish of the season by closing out the tournament with back-to-back rounds played at par. Jonathan Khan tied for 29th at one over. After opening with a 79 (+7), Saferian played rounds two and three under par, and finished only two over par. Brad Nicholson also finished two over. The two tied for 36th. After beginning the day tied for 16th, MacManus fell to T43 after carding a 77 (+5) to finish the tournament. Tom Conran, who competed as an individual in this event, tied for 65th.

 

The John A. Burns Intercollegiate was contested at the Leilehua Golf Course in Schofield Barracks, O’ahu, a par 72, 6,916 yard course.

 

Up Next: Arizona will compete in the Braveheart Classic, March 1 and 2 in Beaumont, Calif.
