Women's Tennis Endures Tough First Day At Pac-10 Tourney

OJAI, Calif. - Arizona junior Laresa Marino outlasted Oregon's Janice Nyland, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, to advance to the second round of the main draw Thursday at the Pac-10 Championships.

Marino fell short in her bid to advance to the quarterfinals falling in straight sets to Arizona State's Adria Engel, 6-4, 6-2.

In other singles main draw action, Wildcat senior Michelle Gough, junior Sophie Regnier and freshman Debbie Larocque dropped their first round contests. Gough was topped by ASU's Megan Yeats, 6-3, 6-3. Regnier was defeated by California's Jieun Jacobs, 6-3, 7-6(3). Southern California's Jewel Peterson battled back from a set down to earn a victory over Larocque, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.

Playing out of the invitational bracket, UA freshman Perrine Pernin cruised to a straight sets victory over UCLA's Jennifer Donahue, 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round. In the round of 16,USC's Melissa Esmero and Pernin battled back and forth before Esmero eked out a victory in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

The Wildcats return to action Friday for third and quarterfinal round action of singles play and the opening two rounds of doubles competition beginning at 8 a.m. MDT.
