Arizona holds a one stroke lead in the tournament over host Western New Mexico. Arizona, who shot a 289 (+5), will look to earn their first victory of the season Sunday. The Wildcats posted a second place finish during the fall in the Wolf Pack Classic. Four strokes off the lead, in third place is South Mountain Community College.
The top seven teams are separated by a total of only seven strokes. Likewise, the three golfers tied for 36th are only seven strokes off the pace. There are six golfers tied for the lead at one under, including Tom Conran and Philip Bagdade of Arizona. Fourth place Chandler-Gilbert Community College also has two golfers tied for the lead, Tom McGrane and Billy Pritchard. Drew Norris from Western New Mexico's JV team and Ryan Word of New Mexico State shot a 70 in the opening round, placing them in the six way tie for first as well.
Of the 54 golfers competing, all five Arizona players placed in the top 30. Peter Ireland's respectable 76 (+5), which put him in 29th, was the highest round of the day for any Wildcat, and was not counted towards the team's cumulative score. John Kostis was three shots over par, tying him for 18th place. One stroke behind him was Kenji Hernandez. Hernandez's 75 was the highest score counted in Arizona's 289 shot total, and was good enough for 23rd place.
The Cactus Thaw is held at the par 71, 6,417 yard Silver City Golf Course in Silver City New Mexico.
