Wildcat Kara Fry Wins Second All-Around Title of the Season

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Arizona women's gymnastics team finished in fourth place with a score of 190.775 at the Silicon Valley Gymnastics Classic Friday night, in front of a crowd of 403, in San Jose State's Spartan Gym. The No. 24-ranked California Golden Bears finished first (194.400), the Oklahoma Sooners came in second (194.025) and the San Jose State Spartans landed in third (191.975). Arizona dropped to 2-4 on the season and 0-1 in the Pac-10 Conference, while California improved to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Oklahoma owns a 3-1 record, and San Jose State opened the year at 1-2.

Arizona scored a season-high 48.050 on beam, and seven Wildcat gymnasts - Nikki Beyschau, Aimee Estella, Kara Fry, Meagan Killpack, Randi Liljenquist, Andi McCabe and Mary Reiss - each set season-high and career-high marks. The Golden Bears topped the field in the vault, beam and floor team events, while Oklahoma won the team bars event. Oklahoma swept top individual event honors on vault, bars (tie) and floor, while Arizona took the event titles on bars (tie), beam and in the all-around.


Individually for the Wildcats, senior Kara Fry scored a 38.950 to win her second consecutive all-around title this season, and she tied a season-high 9.800 on bars to take first place in the event for the second week in a row. Fry finished in third place on beam with a season-high 9.850 and had a 10th-place showing on floor with a 9.775. Junior All-American Randi Liljenquist set a season-high 9.875 on beam and took first-place honors in the event for the second consecutive competition this season. Liljenquist tied for third on floor (9.850) and tied for fifth on vault (9.675).

Senior Mary Reiss competed on beam for the first time in her collegiate career and set a career-high 9.750 in the event. Sophomore Nikki Beyschau scored a season-high 9.650 on vault. Freshman Meagan Killpack posted a career-high 9.325 in her first collegiate beam performance and set a new career-high 9.650 on floor. Fellow freshman Aimee Estella tied her season-high 9.200 on beam and competed on bars for the first time in her collegiate career and set a career-high 9.175 in the event. Freshman Andi McCabe set a new career-high 9.650 on floor.

Arizona completes its three-meet roadswing when the team travels to Berkeley, Calif., on Sunday, Jan. 21, when the Wildcats are set to battle No. 24 California, No. 13 Oklahoma and Utah State, at 2 p.m. PST (3 p.m. MST), in California's Haas Pavilion.
