WACO, Texas ?- The Arizona women’s tennis team is set to open its 2004-05 season in Waco, Texas at the Baylor Invitational on Sept. 17-19. Three Wildcats; seniors Dianne Hollands and Maja Mlakar, along with junior transfer Stephanie Balzert will make the trip to Texas.
This is the first of seven invitational tournaments that will feature Arizona Women’s Tennis players this fall. Arizona’s pair of seniors Hollands and Mlakar, who were recently ranked the top doubles team in the nation, will play in both the singles and doubles competition. The duo posted a record of 19-8 in their 2003-04 campaign, finishing with a No. 5 ranking.
Individually, Hollands is ranked No. 7, coming off of her 2003-04 season, in which she went 31-12 en route to being ranked No. 13. Mlakar, ranked No. 102 according to ITA, went 14-17 in 2003-04, claiming three wins over ranked opponents.
Balzert will be making her Wildcat debut after transferring following her sophomore season at Baylor. Balzert, a native of Germany, finished 9-18 last spring. At Baylor, her last match came March 31 against Southern Methodist’s Jenny Langer, who will also be competing this weekend. In May of her freshman year, Balzert was the 2003 Big XII Champion.
The Wildcats will be joined by Baylor, Tulsa, Tulane, Texas, Texas ?- Arlington, Georgia Tech, Rice, and Southern Methodist for the weekend tournament.
