Minneapolis, Minn. -

The Arizona Wildcat men’s tennis team dropped their first road match of the season, 6-1, to the DePaul Blue Demons. The match marked the first meeting of the two schools and was held at Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

“The guys competed well but we need to learn to adapt a little better to different conditions as well as different opponents,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz.

The day began with doubles play where the Cats were edged on all three courts. On court one, the Blue Demon team of George Chanturla and Filip Dzanko dispatched the Wildcat team of Sumeet Shinde and Kieren Thompson, 8-2. In the No. 2 spot, the freshman-sophomore duo of Andre Vidaller and Ionescu fell, 8-3, to Mathias Hambach and Sven Kasper. To complete the sweep of the Wildcats, the Blue Demon duo of Matija Pallnic and Aaron Chaffee edged the Wildcat’s southwestern duo of Mario Urquidi and Carlos Bermudez, 8-3.

In singles action, Thompson earned the Wildcats only point of the day with a win on court six, where he played Josh Dancu. The Brisbane, Australia native took the first set, 6-3 but fell in the second, 3-6. The match entered a super-tiebreaker and Thompson came out with an 11-9 victory.

Also entering super-tiebreakers were Vidaller and Urquidi in the No. 1 and 5 slots. On court one, Vidaller fell in the first set against DePaul’s Dzanko, 2-6, but answered with a 7-5 victory in the second set. With the match tied at one set apiece a 12-10 super-tiebreaker decided the match in Dzanko’s favor. On court five, Urquidi clinched the first set against Pallnic, 6-4 but fell, 7-6 (5) in the second set. In the super-tiebreaker the El Paso, Texas native was edged 10-5.

Shinde, Bermudez and Ionescu fell in straight sets on courts two, three and four. In the No. 2 slot, Shinde, a freshman from Pune, India, fell 6-2, 6-0 to Chanturla. On court three, Bermudez battled Kasper. The freshman from Tucson fell 6-4 in a close first set and 6-2 in the second. Hambach edged Ionescu, on court four, 6-1, 6-3.

Arizona falls to 3-2 while DePaul improves to 7-3.

The Wildcats will continue the weekend in Minneapolis when they play the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. at Baseline Tennis Center.
