TUCSON - The University of Arizona men's tennis team heads to Irvine, Calif. to compete in the ITA West Regional Championships Oct. 21-25. Eight of the nine Wildcats will participate in the tournament hosted by the University of Southern California and the University of California, Irvine. Play begins Thursday and continues through Tuesday at the Anteater Tennis Stadium.
"We are getting in better and better shape as the fall season continues on," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "Hopefully the hard work will pay off going into the ITA West Regional."
The Wildcats will compete in singles and doubles competition against the likes of 11 other teams including fellow Pac-10 competitors UCLA and USC. Other teams that will be competing are UC Riverside, Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara, Hawaii, University of San Diego, Loyola Marymount University, UC Irvine, Pepperdine and San Diego State University. 100 players total will be competing over the course of the weekend.
For the Wildcats, seniors Andres Carrasco, Geoff Embry, Jay Goldman, and Borja Malo will be competing in singles action along with junior Jason Zafiros, redshirt junior David Humphreys, redshirt sophomore Tom Wolff and freshman Mario Urquidi.
Zafiros, Carrasco and Goldman were all seeded, with Zafiros picked as the No. 12 seed. Carrasco and Goldman both received a No. 17 seed. Zafiros is ranked at No. 107 in the Campbell/ITA Preseason Rankings.
In doubles action, the Wildcats doubles team of Zafiros and Humphreys will take on Brian Mcphee and Alexander Sonesson of Cal Poly in the first round of 64 on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. PT and the Wildcat duo of Urquidi and Wolff will face Cal Poly's duo of Drew Jacobs and Jordan Keplar on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. PT. The Wildcat pair of Carrasco and Embry received a No. 9 seed in the draw earning a bye in the first round. The pair will face Jon Kazarian and Stephen Stege of UCI in the round of 32 on Friday at 8:30 a.m. PT
Malo will begin action for the Wildcats on Thursday at 10 a.m. PT in singles competition when he takes on Michael Grant of USC in the first round of 128. After Malo, Humphreys, Wolff, Embry and Urquidi will all square off at 11:30 a.m. PT.
Humphreys earned a bye into the second round of 64 where he faces JT Sundling of USC. Wolff takes on Kevin Griffin of UC Riverside in the first round of 128, while Embry will play Jared Spiker of Hawaii in the first round of 128. Urquidi will face Joel Giger of USC in the first round of 128.
No. 17-seeded Goldman received a bye into the round of 64 where he will take on the winner of Dmytro Kovalyov of Hawaii and Max Ta Ba Truong of UCLA at 1 p.m. PT. No. 12-seeded Zafiros also earned a bye into the round of 64 where he will play the winner of Warren Hardie of UCLA and Alex Moreno of Pepperdine at 1 p.m. PT. Carrasco will compete in his first match of the day at 2:30 p.m. PT in the round of 64 after receiving a bye in the first round. The senior will face the winner of Quoc Doan of UC Riverside and Tim Shulz van Endert of SDSU.
