TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 36 Arizona women's tennis team (5-10) took on the No. 54 Washington State Cougars (5-14) at home. The Wildcats won the doubles point by taking two of three doubles matches, and dominated in singles by winning all five completed matches. This gave Arizona the 6-0 victory over Washington State for its first Pac-10 win of the season.
In doubles action, in the first position the No. 7 ranked doubles team of juniors Maja Mlakar and Dianne Hollands dominated the team of Chris Martinez and Orsolya Sallai, 8-1. Arizona received its only loss of the afternoon on court 2 where senior Debbie Larocque and freshman Kasia Jakowlew were edged by Washington State's team of Lorena Arias and Zsofia Fodor, 8-6. On court 3, junior Kelly Perry and freshman Jessie Rochefort easily defeated the Cougars' team of Nora Gaal and Zorana Roganovic, 8-1.
In singles action, junior Dianne Hollands played in the familiar first position, and defeated Lorena Arias, 6-0, 6-1. On court 2, junior Maja Mlakar competed against Washington State's Orsolya Sallai, and won in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. The Wildcats also won on court 3 where the Wildcats' lone senior Debbie Larocque defeated Nora Gaal, 6-4, 6-3. Junior Kelly Perry also won her match this afternoon. Perry competed in the fourth position against Chris Martinez. Freshman Jessie Rochefort defeated her opponent, Amy Toth, 6-1, 6-3. The longest match of the afternoon came on court 6 where sophomore Iza Ferreira lost the first set, but came back to win the second set against Nelly Dvornicka. The third set was not played due to rain showers.
The Wildcats will head to the Bay Area in California to take on No. 1 Stanford on Friday April 9, and No. 11 California on Saturday April 10.
