Junior Cristina Baena and Sophomore Julia Kraschinski ranked in Top 10 Individually

Tucson, Ariz.-After a season that included a 21-stroke victory at the NCAA Championships, the Pac-10 Conference Championship, and nine consecutive first place tournament finishes, the Arizona Wildcat Women's golf team is ranked No. 1 in the preseason edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings.

New coach Greg Allen was pleased with the ranking. "For me personally, it's an honor to take over a program with a national championship and a preseason No. 1 ranking. But I'm more happy for the girls. It's a testament to their hard work and outstanding year last year," said Coach Allen.

The Wildcats received 330 votes, 13 more than Pac-10 rival Stanford. Duke (312), Southern California (295), and Auburn (286) round out the top five. In all, the Pac-10 has five teams in the top 20 including No. 11 Arizona State and No. 18 UCLA.

Arizona junior Cristina Baena is the highest-ranked individual on the Wildcats' squad, checking in at No. 2 in the nation, behind only Candie Kung of Southern California. Baena participated in all 11 tournaments last year, finishing first at the Rainbow Invitational in Hawaii. Her year also included a third place showing at the Pac-10 Championships and a tie for 10th at the NCAA Championships. She is one of two Arizona golfers to be ranked in the preseason top-10.

Sophomore Julia Kraschinski is rated No. 7 according to the poll. Kraschinski comes off a year that saw her notch three top-10 finishes, including a second place performance at the NCAA Championships. Kraschinski shot a team- and season-best round of five-under-par 67 at the NCAA Championships.

The MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings, administered by the College Golf Foundation in cooperation with the National Golf Coaches Association, are the official rankings of the Rolex Collegiate Tour. The voting is done by a panel of women's collegiate golf coaches. The next edition of the polls will be released on Oct. 4.

Arizona begins the 2000-2001 season Fri.-Sat., Sept. 15-17, at the 2000 Stetson Fall Preview in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
