LAS VEGAS, Nevada ?- The No. 1 Arizona softball team beat Bowling Green on Saturday, 3-0, at the Eller Media Stadium Classic hosted by UNLV.
Freshman pitcher Taryne Mowatt got her fifth win of the season and kept the Wildcats undefeated by shutting out the Falcons in seven innings. Mowatt struck out eight, allowed six hits and walked one in the Cats’ win.
Offensively, Arizona scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, when senior Jackie Coburn led off with a right-field single. Junior Shelly Schultz put down a sacrifice bunt to move Coburn to second, and senior Jen Martinez pulled through with an RBI single up the middle to score Coburn. Martinez got to second on a groundout by Crystal Farley and scored on a double down the left field line by senior Allyson Von Liechtenstein to put the Cats up, 2-0.
Arizona’s only other run came in the fifth, when Kristie Fox led off with a center-field double and advanced to third on a single by freshman catcher Callista Balko. Martinez was intentionally walked by Falcons pitcher Liz Vrabel to load the bases with two out. Farley came through with a single to left, driving in Fox and putting Arizona up for good, 3-0.
