Following the Wyoming Game, 11/30/2004

Arizona Head Coach Lute Olson:

“(Jay Straight’s) first-half streak was killing us. But in the second half we only gave up three points to him.”

“If you take a look at our rebound balance, we had at least seven guys with at least four rebounds. That’s great to see.”

“I thought Isaiah Fox did a great job for us, especially in the second half after Frye had some fouls. Isaiah was a huge difference for us in the first half, too.”

“Isaiah (Fox’s) experience showed in the first half when we needed him.”

“Our full-court press really disrupted their flow. They had to play faster than they wanted. The press forced them to play at a tempo that was not good for them and good for us.”

“It was good to be at home and great to have the home fans to help us out and react to plays.”

“In the first half we went into the game wanting to get as many guys in as we could.”

“I thought our second half defense was outstanding. We didn’t give them any good looks at threes. We took that part of their game away.”

“We’ve worked the last few days with Hassan (Adams) at the three and the four so we could work on getting more time for Jawann McClellan.”

“We had a lot of positives. We had 18 offensive boards. That’s an indication that we’re going after the ball hard and getting second and third opportunities.”

“It’s important that we’re getting everybody involved on the defensive glass.”

“Turnover-wise, I thought we did a good, solid job. I think we had 10 turnovers out of our top guys. Overall I thought we did a good job of making decisions.”

“We did a much better job on being patient and waiting for an opening to come.”

“We have a great motivator: the bench.”

“(Jawann McClellan) has a lot of ability. He gets to the boards. He obviously can shoot the ball. He’s a great young man. He’s going to learn and he’s going to listen.”

“We really did disrupt their game. Their second half was a scramble-type game. In the first half they had a chance to execute their offense.”

Arizona Player Quotes:

Senior Guard Salim Stoudamire:

“I thought we played good defense in New York and it carried over to tonight. Our offense was our problem last week but we took better shots tonight. We have to keep playing defense.”

“I was just trying to be more aggressive and get to the foul line. I was trying to take better shots.”

“Our defense can carry us far. Our offense will come along with better shot selection. Our jumpers will fall if we attack the basket and get to line more often.”

Senior Center Channing Frye:

“Today was great because everybody contributed in a lot of ways. We have got to play that way. We came back from New York knowing what we had to do. Salim and I know we have to be the leaders. Everyone has to step up on this team and we are starting to do that.”

“The defense really stepped up again tonight. We were hustling and making plays. Everyone was working hard even the guys in there at the end.”

Jawann McClellan is definitely on a fast learning curve. We are going to look at him as a leader even as a freshman. Salim and I know we have to be leaders to him like Luke Walton and Jason Gardner were to us.”

“That press was something we had worked a lot on. We have a lot of other presses but this one worked so we stuck with it. It kept our intensity up and if we can continue to do that we’ll be tough.”

Freshman Guard Jawann McClellan:

“It all starts on defense. I wouldn’t have said that in high school but it’s true for me now. I have to defend and keep my energy up and just do my job.”

“Coach Olson wasn’t my coach a year ago. He got on me hard right away in practice. I took it personal and it has helped me mature.”

“Sometimes, to tell you the truth, I just try to go to the basket and make contact. I know I’m athletic enough to still make the shot. I want to get to the line because I know that can get my jump shot going.”
