ANN ARBOR, Mich. ?- Arizona senior Dianne Hollands lost a second round consolation match at the 2004 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. At the Palm Desert Classic in Palm Springs Calif., a Wildcat doubles pair lost, but then combined to go 3-1 in consolation matches.
Hollands, ranked No. 7, lost her second round consolation match to Georgia’s Shadisha Robinson 6-1, 6-0. Hollands advanced to the second round by default victory over Harvard’s Susanna Lingman. Hollands, a 5-8 seed in the tournament, lost to Michigan’s Michelle DaCosta in the first round of open singles play, dropping her to the consolation bracket.
Junior Stephanie Balzert, who had lost to Southern California’s Diane Matias 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the open singles bracket Friday, defeated San Diego State’s Dita Hauerlandova 6-3, 6-2. After her first round consolation victory, Balzert lost to Courtney Jantz of Fresno State 6-1, 7-6.
Freshman Camelia Todorova had 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2 victories in first and second round consolation matches, opponent names were not available. Todorova dropped to the consolation bracket, following a first round bye and her 6-7, 7-5, 6-0 second round loss to Lucia Santz of Fresno State.
Sophomore Kasia Jakowlew defeated Fresno State’s Jacqui Haskett 6-4, 7-5 in the first round of play Saturday, but then lost to Caroline Raba of Pepperdine 6-1. 6-2. In Saturday’s consolation bracket, Jakowlew advanced through the first two rounds by default victories.
In the doubles bracket, Balzert and Todorova teamed to play Kelly Baritot Courtney Zauft of Texas, losing 8-2. The match was played Frirday, and will be the only doubles match for the Wildcat pair for the tournament.
