SEATTLE, Wash.-With subpar scores from three golfers for the first time in 19 months, Arizona carded a team score of 3-under-par 285 Tuesday at the NCAA Championships and stands in first place after round one of the 72-hole tournament. Individually, a trio of Wildcats are in the top 10 after their opening day performances at Washington National Golf Club.

"I couldn't have dreamed of a better way to open the championships," said second-year head coach Greg Allen. "But this is a long tournament and we know that we still have a lot more work to accomplish before we are satisfied."

Junior Laura Myerscough carded the lowest round of any Wildcat Tuesday as she shot 2-under-par 70 to position herself in third place, just two strokes back of the lead. Freshman Mar Garcia and sophomore Lorena Ochoa also broke par as they each carded 1-under-par 71s to stand tied for 10th place.

After the tournament's first 18 holes, Virada Nirapathpongporn of Duke holds the individual lead as she shot 4-under-par 68 on the par-72, 6,273-yard course. Her performance placed Duke in a two-way tie for second place with 2001 NCAA champion Georgia at 6-over-par 294. Five teams (Auburn, California, Florida, South Carolina and Wake Forest) are knotted in fourth place at 10-over-par 298. Arizona holds a nine stroke advantage over second place.

A season- and career-best, Myerscough's round of 70 makes her the fourth Wildcat to shoot below par at least once this season. The native of Charleston, Ill., led all competitors as she made five birdies on the day, including opening the round with a birdie on the difficult, par-4, 380-yard 10th hole. Only five other golfers in the field birdied hole no. 10.

The youthful Mar Garcia continued her development as she posted her second consecutive round of 71. The younger sister of PGA star Sergio Garcia closed the NCAA West Regional by shooting 71. Garcia, who plays in the fifth spot in Arizona's lineup, finished the first round on a tear as she made birdies on three of the final six holes.

Wildcat sophomore sensation Lorena Ochoa finds herself tied for 10th place after she opened the tournament by shooting 71 Tuesday. Ochoa, who earlier this season won seven consecutive tournaments, finished tied for first at the 2001 NCAA Championship tournament but fell in a sudden-death playoff. Top-ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin performance index, Ochoa is seeking her ninth win of the season and 13th win of her career.

The most experienced golfer in the Arizona lineup, senior Cristina Baena displayed the form that she used to help the Wildcats to the national title in 2000 as she carded an opening-round 73. Baena sits tied for 19th with three rounds remaining. Freshman Miriam Kraschinski completed the Arizona lineup and is tied for 70th at 5-over-par 77.

"Today was just a great team effort," Allen said. "I'm just pleased with our entire lineup. We're excited now to head out tomorrow and get the golf course early."

The Wildcats' score of 285 is the squad's best since a first round of 11-under-par 277 at the 2000 Stanford/Pepsi Invitational on October 20, 2000. The Stanford/Pepsi Invitational also marks the last time three Arizona golfers were under par in the same round.

Second-round play gets underway Wednesday at Washington National Golf Club at 8 a.m. Arizona will begin play at 8:50 a.m. on the first tee.
