Tucson, Ariz. (Oct. 19) -- Wildcat freshman Candice Wilks assisted a goal and scored the gamewinner as the Arizona women's soccer team (4-7-1, 1-2-0 Pac-10) logged a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Oregon (6-5-1, 0-3-0 Pac-10) at home on Friday night. With the win, the Wildcats remain undefeated at home in 2001.
Both teams came out of the gates shooting, but it was Wilks who sent a header just over the Oregon goal less than a minute into the contest for the first on-target shot of the game. Sophomore forward Liz Bartlett too had a narrow miss with her header in the third minute. Oregon made several early skirmishes into the box as well, but they were quickly stifled by UA senior goalkeeper Shannon Monti.
The Ducks found the net first when goalkeeper Sarah Peters sent a long drop kick over the Wildcat defense and found Chalise Baysa, who scored from about 15 yards out at 16:19. Arizona kept up its offensive barrage and reaped the reward in the 30th minute when Wilks zipped up the left side of the field to send a short pass to Bartlett, who was wide open from eight yards. The two teams were tied, 1-1, at the half.
Arizona dominated the second half, out-shooting the Ducks 8-5 for the period. Early in the half, Bartlett again had a header that just slid over the bar. In the 65th minute, freshman midfielder Vanesha Bailey collected a loose ball at the top of the box, dribbled around a couple of Oregon defenders, then pushed the ball forward for Wilks' gamewinning goal.
In the nets, Monti put in another outstanding performance, collecting six saves, while Oregon's Peters had three saves for the match.
The victory is Arizona's first Pac-10 win since Nov. 5, 1999. The Wildcats remain at home for another conference game on Sunday, Oct. 21, against Oregon State at 1 p.m.
