TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team sits in a tie for ninth place after the opening round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Kahuka, Hawaii.
Arizona carded an eight-over 296 tally Wednesday and is tied for ninth place in the 17-team field. California and Texas A&M share the team lead after 18 holes after posting identical 283 (-5) totals.
California's Max Homa and Texas A&M's Conrad Shindler share the individual lead after each posted a four-under-par 68 in the opening round.
The Wildcats were led by senior Tarquin MacManus, who shot a one-under 71 and is tied for eighth place individually. He was the only UA player to play the opening 18 holes under par. Jonathan Khan was two shots behind his teammate, and sat in a tie for 23rd place.
Freshman Erik Oja and senior John Kostis, who is competing as an individual, carded three-over 75s and are tied for 35th place. Stefan Cox, who posted a five-over 77, and Tye Beall, who shot a seven-over 79, are tied for 58th and 76th places, respectively.
The John A. Burns Intercollegiate continues through Friday at the Turtle Bay Resort's Arnold Palmer and George Fazio Courses. The Palmer Course is a par-72, 7,198-yard layout, while the Fazio Course is a par-72, 6,712-yard layout. Live tournament scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
