TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona men’s golf team is tied for 12th in the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship after its first round 303 (+15).

 

Arizona spent most of the day in the top three on the leader board before falling to 12th on the last three holes of the first round. The Cats are only eleven strokes off the lead, however, due to the tight competition.

 

UA has two players in the top 20. Jonathan Khan finished one over on the day and is tied for 12th. Tarquin MacManus shot a 74 (+2) and is tied for 16th.

 

Fourth-ranked Florida took home the first-day lead with a 292 (+4). The Gators lead by two strokes over second place UCLA. The twelfth-ranked Bruins are six over. Eighth-ranked Texas A&M is in third, three strokes off the lead. No. 19 UNLV and no. 18 USC are tied at eight over.

 

Florida’s Tyson Alexander and TCU’s Johan de Beer are tied for the lead at four under. Gregor Main of UCLA, Eddie Olson of UNLV, Andrea Pavan of Texas A&M and Matt Smith of Texas Tech are tied for third at two under.

 

Rich Saferian, Philip Bagdade and Brad Nicholson each shot 78’s (+6) on day one, tying them for 53rd. Junior John Kostis is tied for 60th at seven over. Kostis is competing as an individual in the event.

 

The Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters is contested at the Southern Highlands Golf Course, a par 72, 7,510 yard course. The fifteen-team field includes eleven top-25 clubs. At no.50, Arizona is lowest ranked team in the field. Round two will tee-off tomorrow, March 13, at 8 a.m. PST. The third round will be held March 14.
