Junior Claudio Christen defeated UC Santa Barbara freshman Josh Finkelstein in two sets, 6-4; 6-1.
Junior Bruno Alcala was matched up against another freshman, UC Irvine’s Shimpei Suzuki. Alcala played well on his way to a straight set victory, 6-4; 6-1. Arizona Head Coach Tad Berkowitz was pleased with the team’s victories.
“These wins in the fall tournaments are good for building confidence heading into the spring,” said Berkowitz.
The only Wildcat that did not advance beyond the first qualifying round was junior Francois VanderMerwe. Competing against ATP professional Scott Crichlow, VanderMerwe won the first set 6-3. However, he was unable to sustain his momentum as Crichlow pulled out the next two sets, and the match, 6-1; 6-3.
The event is a part of the USTA Pro Circuit, which features the best collegiate players in the nation, as well as some of the best talent from around the world. The tournament will continue tomorrow with the second round of qualifying.
In the afternoon session Claudio Christen faces off against the sixth seed, Brigham Young’s Nima Roshan. Following that, Bruno Alcala will play one of the nation’s top high school seniors, Steve Forman.
