Arizona Men's Swimming Conquers No. 3 Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. -

Arizona men’s swimming proved it was worth its No. 1 ranking on Saturday after it defeated No. 3 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. The No. 5 women’s swimming team fell to No. 6 Stanford in a close and hard-fought battle.

The men won a close one, with seniors Adam Small (Tempe, Ariz.) and Cory Chitwood (Union, Ky.) earning wins in the 50 free and 200 back, respectively.

Junior Carl Mickelson (Chandler, Ariz.) picked up wins in the 100 breast and 200 breast, while junior Sam Rowan (Eugene, Ore.) won the 400 IM to put the Wildcats in a position to win towards the end of the meet.

Sophomores Mitchell Friedemann (Allenton, Wis.) and Giles Smith (Baltimore, Md.) won the 100 back and 100 fly, respectively.

In addition, the men’s 400 medley relay team was at it again, carrying on its undefeated streak.

On the women’s side, senior Alyssa Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.) earned a win in the 200 free, 500 free and the 200 fly, junior Ellyn Baumgardner (Fairfax, Va.) won the 100 breast, sophomore Margo Geer (Milford Center, Ohio) won the 100 free and junior Chelsey Salli (Vancouver, B.C.) in the 200 breast.

Arizona will return to Hillenbrand Aquatic Center on Saturday, Jan. 28 to take on Texas. The senior swimmers will be recognized in their last home meet of their college careers.
