TUCSON -

Senior second baseman Samantha Quintero started a pair of Arizona scoring rallies in support of Alicia Hollwell's two-hit pitching to help lead the Wildcats to a 4-0 victory over No. 9 Stanford in Pac-10 softball at Hillenbrand Stadium Saturday night.

No. 1 Arizona missed chances at bigger innings each time, plus wasted one early. In all, the Cats left seven runners on base.

UA wasted a scoring chance in the first inning. Caitlin Lowe and Autumn Champion hit slap singles to open the frame, but Stanford pitcher Laura Severson got Wendy Allen and Mackenzie Vandergeest to pop out. Then Lowe was thrown out at third in a delayed double steal attempt.

Quintero doubled to lead off the UA third and set up a three-run rally. An out later, Caitlin Lowe followed with a single and took second on a throw to the plate, but Quintero held at third. Champion hit a chop single to second to drive in Quintero. Wendy Allen singled to drive in Lowe, and took second when the throw from center missed the cutoff play. Vandergeest drew a walk to load the bases, and Kristie Fox hit a bloop single to make it 3-0. But again, Severson bore down and struck out Jackie Coburn and Cristal Farley to leave the bases loaded.

Quintero started another rally with a lead off single in the fourth, moving to third after a walk to Lowe and an infield hit by Champion. With two outs, Vandergeest followed with a single to left to score Quintero, but Lowe was caught in a run-down trying to score on the short hit, stranding two more runners.

The Cardinal had runners on second and third after a hit by Leah Nelson, an error to let Meghan Sickler reach base, and a wild pitch by Hollowell.

Quintero got her third hit of the night to lead off hte UA sixth, but was called out for leaving early on a steal attempt. Lowe followed with her third hit of the game, and sixth in two days, with a slap single.

Hollowell struck out 11 and improved to 35-1 on the year. She stretched her school season record to 426 strikeouts.

Arizona improved to 48-2 overall and 12-1 in Pac-10 play. Stanford, tied for second in the league entering the game, dropped to 9-5 in conference play and 38-13 overall.

The crowd of 2,154 was the biggest of the year for a regulation game. A crowd of 3,541 watched UA play the U.S. Olympic team in April.

The two teams will close out the season's three-game series with a game at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hillenbrand Stadium. UA plays host to the Oregon schools next Friday-Sunday to close its home schedule.
