IRVINE, Calif.- Junior Joe Little tossed seven innings of no-run, three-hit ball as he and reliever John Meloan combined to shut out UC Irvine 3-0 on the road on Friday night. The victory improved the Wildcats' record to 4-3 for the season while UC Irvine fell to 2-3.
Little struck out a career-high 11 UCI batters on the night and Meloan tossed a hitless eighth and ninth innings for his first career save. Little did not allow a runner to get past second base and never really faced much opposition from the UCI order.
The Anteaters' Glenn Swanson matched Little on the mound with six scoreless innings before being lifted for reliever Steve Schroer in the seventh.
Freshman Lee Franklin, playing in place of ailing classmate Brad Boyer, drove in John Hardy with the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly off of Schroer (0-1) in the top of the seventh to snap Arizona's two-game losing streak. The Wildcats added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth on Pat Reilly's RBI single and a wild pitch by UCI's Kris Krise. Reilly's ninth inning single extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games.
Offensively eight of the nine Arizona starters collected at least one hit in the game, with Reilly, Hardy and Nick Hundley accounting for Arizona's three runs.
The Wildcats and Anteaters meet up for game two of the three-game set on Saturday at 7 p.m. Tucson time.
Note: Freshman Brad Boyer did not accompany the team to the game due to a bout with the flu. Five different Arizona players missed action last weekend due to the flu virus.
