MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The third-ranked Arizona women's golf team advanced past the first round Sunday after its first day of competition at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Wildcats carded four wins to defeat Stanford after the Cardinal were only able to win once in the first round. Arizona advanced to face Georgia in the second round later Sunday afternoon, but was postponed due to darkness. Before the postponement, the Wildcats were able to play through hole 12. Georgia leads Arizona going into tomorrow's completion of the second round.
Sophomore Erica Blasberg was victorious in the first round by scoring 2 & 1 to defeat Stanford's Kim Kouwabunpat. Junior Mar Garcia defeated Stanford's Jenni Tangtiphaibootntana 6 & 5 in her first round. Sophomore Whitney Welch was victorious against Stanford, defeating Wendra Liang 3 & 2 in round one. Sophomore Lani Elston defeated Stanford's Kelly Husted, 1 up in the first round. While junior Miriam Kraschinski was defeated by Angela Rho of Stanford, 5 & 3.
The Wildcats will tee off in Monday's completion of the second round beginning at 9:00 a.m. EST with the third round beginning one-hour after the conclusion of round two. The tournament is being played at Barefoot Resort, Dye Course, a par 72, 7,343-yard layout.
