Under fourth-year head coach Niya Butts, Arizona returns five letterwinners and welcomes six newcomers, including three true freshmen, for the 2011-12 season. Junior guard Davellyn Whyte, a two-time All-Pac-12 honoree, leads the Cats with her returning 15.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game from a year ago. Senior guard Shanita Arnold led UA in assists in 2010-11 with her 4.9 per game.
The Grand Canyon University Antelopes, under fifth-year head coach Trent May, are ranked No. 14 in the USA Today ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches' Poll. GCU is coming off its best season in school history. The squad was ranked No. 9 in the final USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II Top 25 poll of 2010-11 after finishing with a 29-3 overall record and advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time.
GCU returns six players from last year's team, including sophomore guard Maylinn Smith, who averaged 10.6 points per game, the third-most on the team. Also back is senior forward Jallisa Butler, who led the squad in rebounding (7.9 per game) and field-goal percentage (.590).
Arizona and Grand Canyon University also met during the 2010-11 season for an exhibition game. Propelled by an early Whyte three pointer and a quick 10-0 run to open the game, the Wildcats topped the Antelopes, 90-56, at McKale Center. Ify Ibekwe pulled down 11 boards, including 10 on defense, and scored 14 points. Brooke Jackson led the squad in points scored with 18. She was 5-for-5 in the first half and ended the game 6-of-7.
