Wildcat senior claims honor following a pair of top-five finishes

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- University of Arizona men’s golfer Brian Prouty was named the Pacific-10 Conference’s Golfer of the Month for February 2007, the league announced Monday.

Prouty, a 6-foot senior from Tucson, Ariz., returned from wrist surgery in the fall by posting two top-five finishes during the first competitive month of the spring season.  He made his 2006-07 debut by winning the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate with a three-round total of 199 (-14) on Jan. 30, a score that included a career-low 62 (-9) in the first round of the event.  It was his first career victory.

He followed that up with a tie for fourth place at the John Burns Intercollegiate, Feb. 23, with an eight-under 208 tally.

All told, four of his six rounds played were in the 60s and five of six have been at par or better.  The former walk-on posted a 67.83 stroke average in those two events.  The effort also placed him atop the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index with a rating of 67.87 through two events.  The Golfweek/Sagarin rating system ranks every NCAA Division I golfer to compete this season.

It was the first time in his career that Prouty was so honored by the Pac-10 Conference.

The Arizona men’s golf team will next be in action, March 17-18, at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
