TUCSON, Ariz. - Bolstered by consistent play throughout the day, the University of Arizona men's golf team posted a four-over-par 580 total Friday and stands in second place after two rounds of the 2003 NCAA Men's Golf West Regional.

All five Wildcat golfers stand within six strokes of par through 36 holes as the squad carded a first-round 295 (+7) and a second-round 285 (-3) en route to second place on the leaderboard. Arizona, tournament-leader UCLA (571/-5) and Washington were the only schools in the field of 27 to post a sub-par round in this tournament. New Mexico (583), UNLV (585) and Georgia (586) round out the top five places.

Individually, junior Chris Nallen leads the Wildcats after 36 holes. Nallen, a native of Blairstown, N.J., carded rounds of 70 (-2) and 69 (-3) and stands second in the 141-man field with a 139 (-5) total. That marked Nallen's 27th round at par or better in 38 rounds played (71.1 percent) this season. He trails New Mexico's Michael Letzig by two strokes heading into Saturday's final round.

Also among the tournament's top-10 individuals is UA's Ricky Barnes. The senior from Stockton, Calif., posted rounds of 75 and 69 and is tied for eighth place at 144 (E). His second-round 69 was his ninth round in the 60s this season.

Wildcat seniors Reid Hatley and Andrew Medley are currently tied for 50th place with identical 75-74=149 (+5) totals. Brian Woolf, the final member of UA's lineup, is tied for 57th place at 150 (+6).

The 54-hole 2003 NCAA Men's Golf West Regional runs through Saturday in Auburn, Wash., at Washington National Golf Club, a par-72, 7,183-yard layout. The top 10 teams and two individuals will advance to the 2003 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, May 27-30 in Stillwater, Okla.
