TULSA, Okla. -- Arizona men's tennis players Andres Carrasco and Jason Zafiros fell in the opening round of competition in the singles Qualifying bracket at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Men's Tennis Championships at the Michael Case Tennis Center. Geoff Embry was defeated Saturday in the opening round of singles Pre-Qualifying action.

"A couple of tough matches for the guys today," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "The competition level is the best in the nation so they have to refocus quickly and try to come away with two wins tomorrow."

No. 107-ranked Zafiros fell in his opening match of the singles Qualifying bracket. The junior fell in two straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to Stanford's Greg Hirshman. Zafiros will face John Huang of Yale in the Qualifying Consolation singles bracket tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT.

Carrasco looked to have the early advantage over Michigan's Evan King in the first set when he took the lead by winning the first game to go up 1-0, but King battled back and tied it at 1-1 and again at 2-2. After that, King took the next three games to take the 5-2 lead. Carrasco answered by winning the next game, but fell 6-3. In the second set, Carrasco came firing back to take a 3-0 lead, but King responded by taking the next six games to clinch the set 6-3. Carrasco will take on Minnesota's Tobias Wernet in the Qualifying Consolation bracket tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT.

Embry fell in his opening match of singles competition Saturday in the Pre-Qualifying bracket. The senior received a bye into the second round, but was defeated in two straight sets by New Mexico State's Jim Brouleau. Embry and Brouleau who squared off against each other earlier in the fall, tied early on in the first set at 1-1, but Brouleau notched the next three games to take a 4-1 lead. Embry answered by winning the next game, but fell 6-2. In the second set, Brouleau carried over his momentum and took a 3-0 lead before Embry bounced back at 4-1 and nabbed the next two games, but fell 6-3.
