Arizona Women's Swimming and Diving Tops California

    TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona women's swimming and diving team defeated Cal Friday afternoon, 146-97, at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The men's team came up short, as they were defeated, 129-112.

    On the women's side of the meet, junior Katie Zimbone won two different events, the 1000 free (10:08.59) and the 500 free (4:58.45). Sophomore Amanda Beard also placed first in two individual events, the 200 IM (2:02.96) and the 200 breast (2:14.59). Junior Sarah Tolar placed first in the 100 free with the time of 50.88.

    The women's 200 medley relay team consisting of sophomore Beth Botsford, Beard, junior Amy Bouta and junior Jenny Vanker swam to a first place finish in 1:42.57. The 400 free relay team made up of Vanker, junior Erin Vogt, freshman Kristen Brennan and Tolar also placed first (3:26.11).

    In the women's 1-meter diving competition, senior Adrian David scored 277.35 points to capture first place. Fellow senior Lindsay Berryman and freshman Claire Febvay scored 270.90 and 257.55 points, respectively, to place second and third. In the 3-meter, Berryman (320.85), David (305.55)and Febvay (285.30) placed first, second and third, respectively.

    For the Arizona men's team, senior Tyler Painter won the 1000 free (9:27.07) and 500 free (4:30.64). Senior Jay Schryver swam the 200 free in 1:39.52 to capture first place.

    Senior Omar Ojeda broke an Arizona school record that had stood since 1989 on the 3-meter, scoring 400.65 points. Junior Ruben Vaca placed second with 347.10 followed by sophomore Scott Koenig in third (326.33). In the 1-meter competition, Ojeda and Vaca again placed first and second, scoring 376.80 and 350.03, respectively.

    The Wildcats face the Stanford Cardinal tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
