UCLA Continues to Hold Lead at National Invitational Tournament

                Host Wildcats remain in third place; Esway, Denton tied for 14th place

               

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- UCLA shot a three-under 285 Monday to remain in the lead after 36 holes at the National Invitational Tournament at Omni Tucson National Golf Course.

 

With Kevin Chappell and Chris Heintz each carding a 69, the fifth-ranked Bruins’ three-under tally enabled the squad to finish the day with a two-round total of 562 (-14).  UCLA picked up one stroke on the field of 15 teams and will carry a two-stroke lead into tomorrow’s final round. Arizona State (564), Arizona and TCU (572), and Tulsa (574) rounded out the top-five places.

 

Leading the way for the host Wildcats is sophomore Travis Esway, who carded a three-under 69 Tuesday, to move into a tie for 14th place at 142 (-2).  Teammate Nathan Tyler is one stroke behind at 143 (-1) and in a tie for 21st place.  Arizona State’s Alejandro Canizares leads the 84-man field by one stroke with a six-under 138 tally.

 

Also competing for the Wildcat varsity was Josh Esler, who is tied for 28th place at 144 (E), Henry Liaw, who is tied fro 36th place at 145 (+1), and Nicholas Park, who is tied for 53rd place at 147 (+3).

 

The Wildcat junior varsity carded the low team round of the day, a four-under 284, and moved into a tie for sixth place at 577 (+1).  Trey Denton is the JV’s top finisher with a two-under 142, which has tied him for 14th place.

 

The National Invitational Tournament runs through Tuesday at Omni Tucson National, a par 72, 7,148-yard facility.  The final round begins at 7:30 a.m. MST.
