TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona men's golf coach Rick LaRose announced Wednesday day that Erik Oja has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to attend the school and play golf. He will report to the school in the fall of 2010.
Oja (pronounced Oh-Yah), a native of Sandviken, Sweden, is currently ranked as the No. 11 boys amateur player in Sweden and the No. 117 overall player regardless of age and professional standing, according to the Swedish Golf Federation. He currently attends Göransson High School.
"Erik is a great young man with as much potential as any of the Swedish players I've seen," said LaRose. "He could become something special. He's a good student and his experience internationally should benefit our lineup ."
In the last year of competition, Oja won the 2009 Vassunda Junior Open to go with nine other top-10 finishes and two top-20 efforts. In 36 rounds played over 14 starts, he posted a 73.08 scoring average.
