Quoting Lute Olson . . .

What impact will Mustafa Shakur’s return have on the new year?

“It’s great to have Mustafa back.  He’s one of the guys that is looked to for leadership.  Along with Ivan (Radenovic) and Kirk (Walters), we will have three really solid senior leaders, and it’s gotten to the point where it’s hard to count on seniors anymore in programs like ours.  Having somebody back in Mustafa who has been a starter all the way, and he’s been through and learned from difficult situations, I think that’s going to be very helpful.”

Comment on the progress of sophomore-to-be Marcus Williams:

“With Marcus, he had a great freshman year and has been working very hard in the offseason.  I think he’s going to have a great year.  He made a lot of progress last year, especially on the defensive end, and his shooting became more consistent as the year progresses.”

With 11 returning lettermen, do you ever worry about having too many guys coming back?

“Every year we look at that, but every top-level program is going to have some of that problem.  You can never count out injuries.  For example, heading into last season I would have thought that Jawann (McClellan) was going to be our top scorer and possibly our top rebounder and he ended up playing 45 minutes all year.”

“That always seems to work itself out as we go through the workouts.  I think it’s going to be really helpful to us that we make the foreign trip up to British Columbia (in September).  We’ll get 10 practices before we leave and five games up there, so that will give us a much better handle on our team.”

“I know that we’re going to continue to play up tempo.  We’ll probably even try to play more up-tempo if that’s possible.  In those first 10 practices, we’ll get a chance to see how some guys respond to the pressure of day-to-day competition.  When that happens, some guys step it up and others are adversely affected.”

Ivan Radenovic was one of your best players over the last half of last year.  What makes him so successful?

“He’s made great progress ever since he got here.  I think people are going to be totally surprised at how much he’s improved over the summer.  He’s one of the hardest-working guys we’ve ever had here.  He’s self driven.  Some guys work hard in practice, but when the offseason rolls around, they take a vacation.  Ivan probably spends more time on his basketball now than he does during the season.”

“He’s become one of our best shooters.  He’ll probably be our rebounding leader.  He’s got his weight up and it’s all muscle.  He came in at mid-season during his freshman season.  I don’t know of anyone who has improved as much as he has in two and a half years.”

You have a nice group of incoming freshmen.  What are the expectations of that trio?

“I’m anxious to see them on the floor with other good players.  They should have an immediate effect on our team.  They will make things interesting.  I’m interested to see them when we get to practice situations.”
