Arizona Head Coach Joan Bonvicini: “We played our hearts out tonight. I’m really disappointed with the loss, but really proud of the girls. There has been a lot of adversity that we have had to face, and we just keep pulling together improving as a team.”

“This was a tough loss, but there were a lot of positive things going on tonight. We did a lot better shooting the second half and that’s when we got things done and back into the game.”

“We lost our lead when USC went to zone. We had a hard time adjusting to that. But when we got on our runs, we stayed in the game. We don’t have a lot of height, but we are quick, so that is one advantage. We did get out rebounded tonight by 15, and that is why we lost tonight, and lose other games as well.”

”I am very proud of the team. The kids stay together and make adjustments when they are needed. I’m proud, not of our record, but of the girls. Their team unity is one of the best I have seen and we are hoping to prepare them for the future. The girls are figuring themselves out right now.”

“The girls are all getting more comfortable on the floor because they know they have to play, and that they are going to get playing time. Kelsey Burns played very well tonight because she is getting more comfortable on the floor. She is going to be a good player for us.”

“Natalie played her heart out. This is her senior year and she knows that every game is her last one against that team. She is really going all out and has had a different mentality in the past two weeks. She now knows she can go all out and get things done for the team.”

Senior guard Natalie Jones:  “Everyone came out together from the start. We had to play catch-up with Cal, and we didn’t want to do that again today. Even though we only had seven players available tonight, everyone seemed to step up.  Kelsey [Burns] and everybody else had a great game.”

On what discussed during Arizona’s last timeout of the game:

“We talked about having to capitalize when we got the ball. There was no specific play, but to have the two ?'bigs’ set screens and roll off of them. Ashley came off the screen and took a shot. I trust her, as I do any of my teammates, to take the big shot at the end of the game.”

“I don’t know what happened at the end of the game.”

“I’m disappointed with losing by one. I would’ve rather lost by four. SC is a good team, a bubble team, almost a Top 25 team, and it just goes to show we wanted this game. We were up 18-4, and we knew we wanted this game.”

“In the second half, we played with a ton of intensity; just playing hard and never giving up, even though we’ve lost a couple of games.”

“The last three minutes of crunch time the team came together. It’s a reflection of what happened in the Oregon game, when we got together during a timeout and said to ourselves that we just would not lose the game.”

“We’ve played with [anything between] seven and 12 players this year. We play with whatever we come out with, and we just know we won’t get that much rest.”

On the upcoming game against UCLA:

“It will be a tough game, because they’re very different from SC. They have three great guards, who are all very good combo guards. We’ll take what we learned from this game. During the week we work on scouting SC and UCLA, but it just comes down to playing our own game.”

Freshman guard Kelsey Burns:  “I don’t know what playing so much felt like. I was just playing and trying to help the team win in any way I could.”

USC Head Coach Mark Trakh: “This game was real important for our chances to play in the NCAA Tournament. If we don’t win this game, we don’t make it into the NCAA’s.”

“I don’t know how we pulled the game out. Arizona kept coming back. Both teams played real hard. Considering everything they have been through, they gave a great effort. It’s a testament to their players and coaches. I’ll be honest, if they have everyone healthy, they are in the top of the league, no question. If they had Jessica Arnold, Ch?© Oh and Shannon Hobson, they’d be a very good team. I give them all the credit in the world for fighting so hard. It is truly admirable.”

“I thought both teams hit a lot of key shots. Arizona kept attacking the basket and making some great plays.”

“We tried to exploit them inside, but we didn’t do a very good job of it. We did get a lot of second chances, but we needed to be more productive.”
