TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona women’s soccer team lost its Pac-10 opener to Oregon, 2-1. The Wildcats had to play from behind almost the entire game, and despite an offensively charged second half they were not able to over the strong play of Oregon’s Nicole Garbin. Garbin was responsible for both Duck goals.

“We certaintly made the conference season harder for ourselves,” said Head Coach Dan Tobias. “Oregon did a great job tonight and you know that Nicole (Garbin) is their leading scorer for a reason.”

In the first half, Oregon got out to an early lead on a goal by Garbin. Garbin received a long pass from Dylann Tharp and scored from inside the box. Arizona nearly evened the score when Laura Huylebroeck appeared to have netted her second goal of the season. It came off a pass from Gianna DeSaverio that began when King blocked an Oregon pass. The goal was wiped away because Huylebroeck was called offsides.

In the second half, Garbin scored her second goal, assisted by Tiffany Smith. The Wildcats scored their first goal at the 65:25 mark on a goal netted by Jacqueline Broussard. The goal was assisted on by Lindsay Lum.

Defensively, Chelsea McIntyre had no saves in the game but she did come out to collect numerous cross attempts by Oregon. Arizona out shot the Ducks 15 to eight but were not able to take advantage of its opportunities.

“We’ve got to be more consistent over 90 minutes,” explained Tobias. “I can’t find a game in our 12 games that we’ve been solid over 90 minutes. We need to be better organized defensively and tighter. Attacking wise, we need to take better care of the ball.”

Arizona, which fell to 7-5 on the season, will be in action again on Sunday afternoon when it takes on Oregon State at 1 p.m.
