Game 10: Arizona 12, Drake 2
TUCSON - Arizona's power and scoring in every inning propelled the No. 3-ranked Wildcats to a 12-2 victory over winless Drake in Saturday afternoon Worth Wildcat Invitational softball tournament action.
UA scored a run in the first, loading the bases with a hit batter, one hit and a walk. Mackenzie Vandergeest drew another walk to drive in a run, but UA stranded three when Jackie Coburn struck out looking to end the threat.
Candace Abrams led off the UA second with her first career home run, then Meghann Finnerty walked, was sacrificed to second by Crystal Farley and scored on Jennie Finch's double down the left field line to make it 3-0.
But Drake (0-8) climbed back into it with a two-run second of its own, though both runs were unearned. Jamie Waterman led off with a single, Julie Moses hit a sacrifice bunt and Coburn was unsuccessful getting the lead runner to put runners at first and second. Two outs later UA shortstop Lovie Jung's error let one run cross, and Malay Bouaphakeo doubled to center to score another.
Farley drew a two-out bases-loaded walk to drive in a run in the third and a wild pitch by Drake's Michelle Markham brought in another. She walked three in the inning.
UA pitcher Jenny Gladding followed a Vandergeest single with her sixth home run of the year in the fourth to make it 7-2. Leneah Manuma had an RBI single and Vandergeest hit a sacrifice fly to make it 9-2, then Jackie Coburn later blasted a three-run homer to right to make it 12-2.
Drake shortstop Waterman and UA first baseman Finch each turned unassisted double plays in the game. Jenny Gladding (6-2) scattered five hits to earn the victory for UA (15-2).
