Berkeley, Calif. ?- The University of Arizona women’s soccer team (12-3-0, 3-1-0) fell to No. 14 California (8-3-2, 1-1-1) for its third loss of the season and first loss in the Pac-10.
Neither team was able to register a goal in the first half as Arizona goalkeeper freshman McCall Smith and California goalkeeper Ana Key had one save each.
Just over ten minutes into the second half, California freshman Stephanie Wieger scored her sixth goal of the season to give the Golden Bears the 1-0 lead. Wieger scored on a fast break from 12 yards out off of assists from juniors Lindsay Clute and Liz Eisenberg. The two teams played through rain late in the second half as California held on for the 1-0 win.
Tobias discussed the 1-0 loss.
“Each team had a couple of chances in the first half,” Tobias said. “They scored early in the second half. If we would have scored one of our earlier chances, I think the rest of the game would have been a different story. California is a good quality team. We just came up short.”
“We will be better from this weekend,” Tobias continued. “We are entering the second half of the Pac-10 schedule and we will definitely be prepared.”
Arizona will return to Tucson to train during the week before heading to Tempe, Ariz. on Friday, Oct. 22 to take on Arizona State at 7 p.m.
