TUCSON, Ariz. ?- Arizona was able to defeat Arizona State, 6-1, with strong play in both doubles and singles. The Wildcats improve to 9-5 this season and have already surpassed their win total from last season. Arizona still has its seven Pac-10 matches remaining. The Sun Devils fall to 6-9 on the season.

“I thought we did a great job today,” said assistant coach Cory Hubbard. “There is more on the line against our in-state rivals. Before the match the guys were fired up to play and they weren’t going to lose.”

In doubles play, Arizona State won the first match of the day. The Sun Devils Jonathan Kinsella and Ryan Waits defeated Jeff Groslimond and Claudio Christen in the No. 1 spot, 8-5. The Wildcats then evened things up with a victory on court two. Roger Matalonga and Francois VanderMerwe defeated Nick Hegarty and Ryan McBride, 8-4. Bruno Alcala and Peter Zimmer won the doubles point for Arizona with a 9-8 (7-1) tiebreaker victory over Mike Beatty and T.J. Bellama.

“We came back from being down match point,” said Alcala. “Then we really believed we could win. The crowd was the best crowd this season and it really helped.”

The momentum from doubles carried into singles play for the Wildcats. Jason Labrosse claimed the first singles point with his easy win over T.J. Bellama in the No. 5 spot, 6-0, 6-2. Claudio Christen won on court three in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, over Arizona State’s Ryan McBride. The Sun Devils won their only point in the No. 6 position. Wes Miller defeated Peter Zimmer, 6-3, 6-2.

Bruno Alcala’s 7-5, 6-1 victory over Nick Hegarty in the No. 4 spot secured the team’s win. Seniors Roger Matalonga and Jeff Groslimond were down by one set but were able to come back and win their next two sets to make the final team score 6-1.

Arizona will begin Pac-10 play at home next weekend. The Wildcats will host USC on Friday, March 31, at 1:30 p.m. They will then take on defending national champion UCLA on Saturday, April 1, at 1p.m.
