MINNEAPOLIS – Using a fourth-place finish on the 3-meter springboard from Thursday, University of Arizona diver Samantha Pickens was one of six female divers from the Zone E region selected to compete at the NCAA Championships next week in Austin, Texas.
After placing fourth on the 3-meter and sixth yesterday off the 1-meter board, Pickens had to wait and see if there’d be any repeat champions in any events. As it turned out, Pickens was the fifth of six divers taken after USC’s Tori Ishimatsu and ASU’s Elina Eggers each placed among the top three on all three events, opening up additional positions.
Pickens will team with UA’s 11 swimmers who are already qualified for the NCAA’s. Additionally, now with Pickens, in her first year with the Wildcats, half of Arizona’s NCAA roster is comprised of freshmen.
Andres Guerra was the only Wildcat to compete off the platform today and placed sixth overall with a score of 632.60. USC’s Harrison Jones won the event with an overall score of 863.15.
